Château Laurens is one of Agde’s most remarkable hidden gems, set in the beautiful Parc de Belle-Isle beside the River Hérault. Built around 1898 for Emmanuel Laurens, a wealthy traveller and passionate dreamer, this extraordinary villa combines Art Nouveau with Oriental and classical influences, creating an interior filled with colourful ceramics, elegant woodwork, stained glass and intricate decorative details. Recently restored after years of careful work, the château reopened to the public in 2023 and offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into the imagination and extravagant lifestyle of its original owner. Cathédrale Saint-Étienne d'Agde

The Cathédrale Saint-Étienne is one of Agde’s most striking historic landmarks, standing proudly on the banks of the River Hérault. Built largely in the 12th century from dark volcanic basalt from nearby Mont Saint-Loup, its unusual black stone gives the cathedral a dramatic and imposing appearance. More like a medieval fortress than a traditional church, it features thick defensive walls, crenellations, and a 35-metre-high tower that once served as a keep. Inside, the atmosphere is much more peaceful, with beautiful religious artwork and a remarkable 17th-century marble altarpiece. Classified as a historic monument in 1840, the cathedral is a fascinating place to visit and an essential stop when exploring Agde’s ancient town centre.

Canal du Midi

The Canal du Midi is one of the great historic treasures of southern France and a remarkable feat of 17th-century engineering. Built between 1667 and 1694 under the direction of Pierre-Paul Riquet, the canal was created to connect the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, transforming trade and travel across the region. Stretching for around 360 kilometres and featuring hundreds of locks, bridges, aqueducts and other structures, it was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. In Agde, the canal is particularly special, with its famous round lock and its connection to the River Hérault. Today, visitors can enjoy peaceful walks and bike rides along the waterways or experience the canal by boat, surrounded by beautiful landscapes and centuries of history.
