Agde Festival

Fête de la Saint-Pierre et des Pêcheurs is one of Agde’s most traditional annual celebrations, usually taking place in early July in honour of Saint Peter, the patron saint of fishermen. The three-day festival brings Agde and Le Grau d’Agde to life with maritime traditions, including processions, a torchlit parade, the blessing of fishing boats at sea and a moving tribute to fishermen lost at sea. Visitors can also enjoy traditional Languedoc jousting on the River Hérault, seafood and sardine tastings, live music and spectacular fireworks. It is a wonderful opportunity to experience Agde’s strong connection with the sea and its local fishing heritage.

Sports competitions on the Hérault River in Agde – traditional 'joutes nautiques' tournaments

Traditional joutes nautiques, or water jousting, are one of Agde’s most distinctive sporting traditions and a spectacular sight during the summer months. Competitors stand on raised platforms at the front of colourful boats and use long wooden lances to try to knock their opponents into the Hérault River. The tournaments take place along the riverfront, particularly around the Cœur de Ville and Le Grau d’Agde, and are accompanied by music, cheering crowds and a lively local atmosphere. Dating back centuries in the Languedoc region, these competitions are an important part of Agde’s cultural heritage and offer visitors a unique opportunity to experience a traditional local sport.
